The Indian stock market began the week with a mixed trend on Monday, September 21, 2026. The BSE Sensex opened higher, while the NSE Nifty 50 started trading with a marginal decline. Buying was seen in selected large-cap stocks, while several major IT stocks remained under pressure.
The BSE Sensex opened 240.22 points, or 0.32 percent, higher at 74,535.18. In contrast, the NSE Nifty 50 opened 16.20 points, or 0.07 percent, lower at 23,330.20. The two benchmark indices therefore began the first trading session of the week in different directions.
On Friday, the Sensex ended the trading session on a weak note, while the Nifty closed higher. At Monday's opening, both sector-specific buying and selling were seen in the market.

According to opening market data, 24 of the 30 Sensex constituents opened in the green, while six stocks began trading lower. Among the 50 Nifty constituents, 31 stocks opened higher and 18 opened lower. One stock showed no significant movement during the initial trade.
UltraTech Cement recorded the best opening among Sensex constituents, with its shares rising 3.27 percent. Asian Paints gained 2.19 percent, IndiGo rose 1.46 percent and Titan advanced 1.41 percent. Trent shares opened 1.38 percent higher, while Larsen & Toubro gained 1.12 percent, ITC rose 1.07 percent and ICICI Bank increased 1.07 percent. Kotak Mahindra Bank was up 1.01 percent.
Mahindra & Mahindra, NTPC, Bajaj Finserv, Sun Pharma, Hindustan Unilever, BEL, Eternal and Axis Bank were among other major stocks that opened higher.
Among Sensex constituents, Bharti Airtel recorded the weakest opening, with its shares declining 1.07 percent. Adani Ports fell 0.99 percent, Infosys declined 0.81 percent and Power Grid was down 0.74 percent. TCS shares opened 0.43 percent lower, while Tech Mahindra declined 0.11 percent.
