This is India's third steel slag road, but globally, it is the first such road built within a port complex. This remarkable achievement has positioned India and APSEZ (Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone) as leaders in sustainable maritime infrastructure.
Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ) has achieved a major global milestone by constructing the world's first steel slag road, built within a port. This road is located at Hazira Port in Gujarat and is India's third steel slag road, but the first of its kind within a port globally.
1.1-kilometer-long road made of steel slag
This 1.1-kilometer-long road within Hazira Port connects the Multi-Purpose Berth (MPB-1) to the coal yard. The entire road has been constructed using processed steel slag aggregates, which is waste material generated during steel manufacturing. This entire project is based on the 'waste to wealth' concept and adds a new chapter to the field of environmentally friendly infrastructure.
Technical partnership with CSIR-CRRI
This project has been completed in collaboration with the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The road's design and structure have been developed in such a way that it can withstand heavy port traffic and function without repair for a long time.
Technical innovation in road design
CSIR-CRRI has prepared a flexible pavement design for this road. This design provides greater capacity and durability at a lower cost. At the same time, the impact on the environment is reduced through the use of industrial waste like steel slag. This design has been specifically developed keeping in mind the internal traffic of ports and the pressure of heavy machinery.
Part of the second phase of the BGCT project
This road being built at Hazira Port is part of the second phase of the Bulk and General Cargo Terminal (BGCT) project. This phase focuses on increasing the port's handling capacity and implementing green technologies.
India's big leap in maritime infrastructure
By building the world's first port-inside steel slag road, India and the Adani Group have established themselves as a leading nation in the field of global maritime infrastructure. This initiative is a b step towards future green ports.
Several prominent figures present at the inauguration
The historic road was inaugurated by Dr. Vijay Kumar Saraswat, Member (Science & Technology), NITI Aayog. Along with him, Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, Director General, CSIR and Secretary, DSIR, and Manoranjan Parida, Director, CSIR-CRRI and President, Indian Roads Congress, were also present.
APSEZ's focus on innovation and sustainability
This project of the Adani Group is not just a civil construction, but it is a concept that brings together innovation, industrial ecology, and environmental sustainability. The company says that it will continue to contribute to the country's progress through more such projects.
Hazira Port is becoming a model of green infrastructure
Such sustainable initiatives at Hazira Port are making it a model in the direction of green ports. After this steel slag road, it is now expected that this technology will be adopted in other ports and industrial areas as well. This is an example that can make India a leader on the path of global green development.
