China launches a new reporting channel to crack down on Taiwan independence supporters, allowing anonymous tips on suspected individuals. This move has increased anxieties in Taiwan.
Beijing-Taiwan: China recently implemented a new policy that could create difficulties for Taiwan supporters and those advocating for independence. Beijing has established a dedicated complaint channel where individuals can report those supporting Taiwan independence or obstructing peace talks with China. This action has instilled fear among Taiwan independence supporters.
Informants' identities will remain confidential
Chinese authorities have clarified that any individual residing in Taiwan with information about such groups or individuals can report through this channel. Beijing has also assured that complainants' identities will be kept strictly confidential and that severe legal action will be taken against offenders. However, the specifics of the punishment for those reported remain unclear.
China levels serious accusations against the Taiwanese government
The Chinese administration claims that Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is oppressing its citizens and targeting independence supporters. The State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office issued this decree on March 26, stating that Taiwanese government officials, business figures, and some influential social media personalities are involved in the DPP's alleged 'crimes'.
This decree makes it clear that China aims to tighten its grip on Taiwan.
China's increasing pressure on Taiwan
China has long considered Taiwan a part of its territory and has repeatedly threatened to forcibly incorporate it. Conversely, Taiwan views itself as an independent nation and consistently opposes China's policies. Recently, Taiwanese President William Lai Ching-te labeled China a 'foreign hostile force,' further escalating tensions between the two nations.
