Blood Deficiency in Women: Anemia (blood deficiency) is a common health issue among women in India. According to the National Family Health Survey, approximately 60% of girls aged 15 to 19 and 53% of pregnant women are affected. The primary causes of anemia include iron and folic acid deficiency, neglect of nutrition during menstruation and pregnancy. This leads to fatigue, weakness, and, in severe cases, endangers the health of both mother and child. Experts recommend that women consume a diet rich in iron, vitamins A and C, and undergo regular check-ups.
Why Women Neglect Their Health
It is often observed that women tend to neglect their health while managing both household and external responsibilities. An unbalanced diet, lack of regular check-ups, and inadequate nutrition contribute to the problem of anemia. Women often prioritize the health and needs of their families, causing their own health to take a backseat. This is why cases of anemia are continuously reported among them.
How Blood Deficiency Occurs
The body contains red blood cells, which are responsible for transporting oxygen to every part of the body. When these cells are not produced in sufficient quantities, it leads to anemia. This deprives the body of necessary oxygen, leading to problems like weakness, fatigue, and dizziness.
The Situation is More Serious in Pregnant Women
The problem of anemia becomes even more critical in pregnant women. According to the National Family Health Survey, about 53 percent of pregnant women in India suffer from anemia. Blood loss during periods and a lack of iron and folic acid in the diet affect the process of blood formation. During pregnancy, women need to produce blood for themselves and their babies. In such cases, nutritional deficiency can be dangerous.
Symptoms of Anemia
The most common symptom of anemia is persistent fatigue. Other signs include paleness, shortness of breath, frequent headaches, and feeling weak even during light activities. Often, women dismiss these symptoms as normal, which worsens the situation.
What to Eat to Combat Blood Deficiency
To overcome iron deficiency, it is essential to consume an iron-rich diet. Women need about 19 milligrams of iron daily. Spinach, beetroot, tofu, apples, pomegranates, almonds, dates, raisins, amla (Indian gooseberry), eggs, and jaggery are good sources of iron. Additionally, vitamins A and C are also crucial. Fruits and vegetables like oranges, lemons, papayas, strawberries, bell peppers, and Malta oranges help the body absorb iron effectively.
Folic acid deficiency is also a significant cause of anemia. Consuming green leafy vegetables, bananas, peanuts, broccoli, chicken, and sprouted grains is recommended to promote the formation of new red blood cells in the body.
