Yavatmal: On August 20, four children drowned in a water-filled pit at a railway flyover construction site in Darwha. The deceased children were between 10 and 14 years old and were playing near the pit. After the accident, the police and administration have launched an investigation into the negligence of the construction company. Meanwhile, continuous rains in Nashik and Marathwada have caused a dangerous rise in the water levels of dams and rivers, leading to the inundation of several areas and increased vigilance.
Four Children Die in Yavatmal Accident
According to local police, the deceased children were between 10 and 14 years old. The accident occurred near Darwha railway station, where rainwater had filled a pit dug for the construction of a flyover. The children fell into it while playing or attempting to swim.
The deceased have been identified as Rihan Aslam Khan, Golu Pandurang Narnaware, Saumya Satish Khadsan, and Vaibhav Ashish Bothle. A pall of gloom has descended over the area following the accident, and the police are investigating the matter. The administration has also initiated an investigation into the negligence of the construction company.
Questions Raised on Negligence at Construction Site
Local officials say that the pit was left open without adequate safety measures. Due to continuous rain and waterlogging, this pit proved to be extremely dangerous for children.
Experts say that such accidents often occur due to the lack of adequate safety provisions for children and local people at construction sites. The administration's lapse is clearly visible.
Torrential Rains in Nashik Cause Rivers to Swell
The havoc of continuous torrential rains continues in the Nashik district of Maharashtra as well. Additional water was released from the Gangapur dam into the Godavari River, causing the river's flow to intensify. Small temples in the Ramkund and Godaghat areas have been submerged. The famous Dutondya Maruti statue has also been partially submerged in water.
The local administration and water management department are vigilant, and actions are being taken to relocate people living along the riverbanks to safer locations.
Administration Issues Warning
The water reservoir in the Jayakwadi dam, located in the Marathwada region, has filled up to more than 95%. The irrigation department has indicated that water may be released from this dam if necessary. This dam is the largest water source in the region, and its filling will provide relief to farmers and drinking water supply.
In the event of water being released from the dam, the surrounding low-lying areas may be submerged, so the administration has issued a warning.
