ACS Officer Nupur Bora from Assam Arrested on Charges of Possessing Assets Disproportionate to Income. ₹90 Lakhs in Cash and Gold Jewelry Worth Over ₹1 Crore Recovered from Guwahati Residence.

Nupur Bora Arrested: A case of corruption has once again surfaced in Assam. Nupur Bora, an officer of the Assam Civil Service (ACS), has been arrested on charges of possessing assets disproportionate to her known sources of income. A team from the Chief Minister's Special Vigilance Cell raided her residence in Guwahati and seized ₹90 lakh in cash and gold jewelry worth over ₹1 crore.

Who is Nupur Bora?

Nupur Bora is a resident of Golaghat and joined the Assam Civil Service in 2019. She was currently posted as Circle Officer in Goraimari, Kamrup district. It is alleged that she was involved in controversial land dealings during her previous posting in the Barpeta Revenue Circle.

According to government records, Nupur Bora allegedly illegally benefited from people's properties in several land deals. It is accused that she transferred land belonging to Hindus to suspicious individuals in exchange for money.

How was Nupur Bora caught?

The Chief Minister's Special Vigilance Cell had been monitoring Nupur Bora for the past six months. This surveillance began when complaints of controversial land deals surfaced against her in the Barpeta Revenue Circle. On Monday, the Cell's team raided her residence in Guwahati and carried out the seizure. Additionally, her rented house in Barpeta was also searched.

The raid not only led to the recovery of cash and gold jewelry but also resulted in a raid on the house of her alleged associate, Lat Mandal Surjit Deka. Deka is posted in the Barpeta Revenue Circle office and is accused of colluding in several land deals.

What are the allegations?

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma clarified that Nupur Bora misused her position in the Barpeta Revenue Circle to transfer land in exchange for money. Several complaints had been received against her.

Sarma stated that corruption is rampant in revenue circles in minority-dominated areas. In Nupur Bora's case, it was observed that several lands were transferred illegally, and her associates also played a role in this. The Assam Police and the Special Vigilance Cell team have arrested Nupur Bora. ₹90 lakh in cash and gold jewelry worth over ₹1 crore have been seized from her residence.

A raid was also conducted at the residence of Lat Mandal Surjit Deka, and relevant documents and evidence of property were collected. An investigation is ongoing, and it is possible that others may also be found involved in this case. Chief Minister Sarma said that strict action has been taken in this matter to prevent such incidents in the future. He also informed that several important documents and evidence have been found so far in the investigation, which will aid in further proceedings.

Nupur Bora's Career

Nupur Bora's service in the Assam Civil Service began in 2019. She held several important administrative responsibilities during her postings as Goraimari Circle Officer and in the Barpeta Revenue Circle. However, the complaints against her and the revelation of possessing assets disproportionate to income have proven to be a major setback for her career. Her future will now depend on the court and the investigation report.

Chief Minister Sarma's Reaction

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that Nupur Bora had been under surveillance for six months. Following complaints of controversial land deals, the Special Vigilance Cell took proactive measures and initiated an investigation. Sarma asserted that strict action is being taken against corruption, and no officer is above the law in maintaining the rule of law in the state.
