In Bokaro, the tribal community dedicates itself with full devotion to the worship of Maa Durga during the days of Navratri. Many families recite the Durga Saptashati and organize special rituals (Tantra Sadhana). Hiralal Manjhi, former District President and Central Member of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, has been continuously worshipping Mahamai during Navratri for the past seven years. His entire family immerses itself in this devotion. He explained that they perform Kalash Sthapana, install idols of the nine planets (Navagraha), priests chant mantras, women wear sindoor, and observe fasts. Through this worship, individuals find liberation from sorrows and troubles, and attain peace.
Tribal society has traditionally honored women, and this worship is a symbol of that respect. District Council member Nisha Hembram states that women from many tribal families observe fasts on Mahashtami and
visit goddess temples to offer prayers.
Tantra Sadhana
In some villages, Tantra Sadhana is performed during Navratri. For instance, Ramprasad Baskey of Chandankiyari says that there is a tradition of special Tantra puja in his village. Tribal families in villages like Balidih, Govind Bazar, Gorabali, Bansgora, and Chandankiyari participate and perform special rituals on Ashtami-Navami of Navratri. Due to busy schedules, it is not possible for many to perform worship for all nine days, so many people perform rituals on special days (Ashtami-Navami). This worship brings peace, prosperity, and a social message to people.
