At an event in Sant Kabir Nagar, he said from the stage that Akhilesh Yadav is a religious person and cannot be against religion. He also mentioned that he shouldn't have said this, but the truth had escaped his lips.

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh said that Akhilesh Yadav is a person of religious inclination. His father and former Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav himself was a devotee of Hanuman Ji. He further stated that Akhilesh Yadav has also constructed a grand temple. He is a descendant of Lord Krishna and cannot be anti-religion. Brij Bhushan said that if Akhilesh Yadav says anything against religion, it is only because of his political compulsions.

The BJP leader further stated that he did not want to make this statement from the stage because it could be considered politically inappropriate. But since scholars were present at the event, he could not restrain himself. Brij Bhushan said, "I shouldn't have said this, but it is the truth and it came out of my mouth."

He said that the right to speak and listen to religious matters is not limited to any one caste or class. Those who question this should learn from the lives of great personalities like Ved Vyas and Vidur. He also said that no person should insult any caste, but there should be no politics over religious traditions.
