The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe weather alert for large parts of the country, forecasting heavy rainfall, b winds and thunderstorms across 17 states within the next 13 hours.
According to the latest forecast, adverse weather conditions are likely in several regions, including Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, with wind speeds expected to reach 80–90 kmph at some locations. The IMD has also warned of lightning activity across parts of eastern India, raising the risk of damage to life and property. Strong winds may also affect trees and vulnerable structures.
The IMD has issued alerts for Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Tripura, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Many areas in these states are expected to experience thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rainfall and lightning.
The weather department said wind speeds could range between 60 kmph and 90 kmph in some regions. Potential impacts include damage to trees and electricity poles, risks to temporary structures and mud houses, disruption of power supply, and damage to standing crops. Farmers have been advised to avoid working in open fields and remain alert until weather conditions improve.
In Delhi-NCR, an alert for thunderstorms and rainfall has been issued for June 6. Winds are expected to reach 60–70 kmph, while temperatures are forecast to remain around 39°C maximum and 29°C minimum.
In Uttar Pradesh, districts including Meerut, Kanpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj and Gorakhpur are under alert for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. Wind speeds may reach 60–65 kmph.
In Bihar, districts including Patna, Gaya, Darbhanga and Muzaffarpur are expected to experience heavy rainfall and stormy winds through June 6–7.
Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha and Chhattisgarh are forecast to receive heavy rainfall accompanied by winds of 70–80 kmph. Several districts of Madhya Pradesh are also likely to witness rain with thunderstorms.
Experts have indicated a higher risk of lightning in these regions, requiring increased caution in rural areas.
Heavy rainfall is expected in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, where the risk of landslides remains elevated.
In Himachal Pradesh, wind speeds may reach 60–65 kmph. Uttarakhand could experience storms with wind speeds of 70–75 kmph, while several districts of Jammu and Kashmir are forecast to receive heavy rainfall and b winds.
Tourists in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have been advised to exercise additional caution.
Kerala and Tamil Nadu are expected to continue receiving heavy rainfall due to active monsoon conditions.
Kerala may witness winds of up to 80 kmph, while Chennai, Madurai and surrounding areas of Tamil Nadu are forecast to receive heavy rainfall.
Heavy rainfall and b wind alerts have also been issued for Assam and Tripura. Waterlogging may develop in parts of the Brahmaputra Valley and adjoining areas.
