Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai has launched a new political platform, “We The Leaders,” after formally resigning from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). According to sources, more than one million people joined the new digital-based political movement within its first few hours of launch.
Announcing the initiative on his social media platforms, Annamalai said the movement is focused on education, healthcare, sustainability and youth leadership. He described it as a step toward “people-led politics.”
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, he said that registrations exceeding one million within a few hours indicate growing public confidence in alternative and participatory politics. According to him, the initiative is not merely a political platform but a “mission to create new leadership.”
Annamalai’s decision to leave the BJP comes as preparations intensify for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. He was removed from the post of Tamil Nadu BJP president in April 2025, after which his role within the party organisation became limited.
According to sources, he was also kept away from election strategy discussions, candidate selection and alliance negotiations, leading to growing differences between him and the party leadership.
In addition, his public comments on certain central government policies reportedly contributed to internal disagreements within the organisation. Following these developments, he decided to pursue an independent political path.
The launch of the “We The Leaders” campaign generated a b response across digital platforms. Supporters described it as a youth-focused and transparent political initiative.
Annamalai said the movement is intended for people who want to play an active role in education reforms, improvements in healthcare services and the creation of new employment opportunities. He appealed to citizens to join the platform and participate in the process of change.
Annamalai is a former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer who entered politics after leaving the civil service. Born in Tamil Nadu, he held several responsibilities during his administrative career.
He resigned from the civil service in 2020 and joined the BJP. The party subsequently elevated him within the organisation and appointed him president of the Tamil Nadu BJP. His leadership style and appeal among younger voters helped establish him as a prominent figure in state politics.
During his tenure in the BJP, Annamalai played a role in organisational expansion and strengthening the party structure down to the booth level. He was also appointed co-in-charge for the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections.
However, organisational differences and strategic disagreements emerged over time. After being removed from the state president’s post in 2025, his influence within the party became limited, following which he chose to pursue an independent political course.
