Mumbai Local Trains to Get More 15-Carriages for Enhanced Safety and Comfort

The Railways are preparing to take a significant step to make local train services, considered Mumbai's lifeline, safer, more comfortable, and punctual. Railway Board Chairman and CEO Satish Kumar, during a review meeting of railway projects at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) on August 4th, directed officials to increase the number of 15-car trains in the Mumbai Local.

The meeting focused on the progress of ongoing projects aimed at enhancing passenger safety, convenience, and alleviating overcrowding. Satish Kumar also emphasized that all projects aimed at increasing the capacity of suburban rail services in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region should be completed within the stipulated timeframe, providing passengers with a better travel experience.

Participation of Key Departments in the Meeting

Senior officials from Central Railway (CR), Western Railway (WR), Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC), Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA), and Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) participated in this review meeting. During the meeting, officials stated that plans are being considered by Central and Western Railways to increase the number of 15-car local trains, which will provide relief from overcrowding and make travel safer and more comfortable for passengers.

Station Upgradation and Terminal Inspection Also Conducted

Following the review meeting, Satish Kumar inspected the redevelopment work of CSMT station, which is being developed by RLDA. He also visited the Jogeshwari Yard, where the construction of a new coaching terminal by Western Railway is progressing rapidly. During this time, he received information from the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) on the status of the upgrade of 17 suburban stations under the Station Improvement Program and directed that passenger safety and the quality of construction work be given top priority.

Capacity of Mail and Express Trains Will Also Increase

The Railway Board Chairman had previously inspected Khar and Ghatkopar stations on August 2nd. It was also mentioned in the meeting that work is underway on a plan to increase the passenger capacity of not only local trains but also mail and express trains. The progress of the mega coaching complex was also reviewed. Officials stated that in view of Mumbai's ever-increasing population, the railway's focus is on making travel safe, convenient, and punctual, so that people can get better transport facilities.
