PM Modi Manipur Visit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Manipur on September 13. During this visit, he will gift development projects worth over ₹8500 crore to the state. PM Modi will lay the foundation stone for projects worth approximately ₹7300 crore from Churachandpur's Peace Ground. This area is predominantly inhabited by the Kuki community. Additionally, from Imphal, he will inaugurate infrastructure projects worth around ₹1200 crore. Imphal is primarily an area of the Meitei community.
Background of Ethnic Violence in Manipur
Manipur witnessed severe ethnic violence in 2023. The clashes between the Kuki and Meitei communities resulted in the deaths of over 260 people. Thousands were forced to leave their homes, and a large number of families were displaced. In this context, the Prime Minister's visit is considered highly significant. Efforts have been underway for a long time to normalize the situation in the state, and the central government is taking several steps in this direction.
Speculation Regarding Mizoram Visit
In recent days, there were speculations that the Prime Minister might add a Manipur program to his Mizoram visit. However, this was not officially confirmed by the government or the BJP. On Thursday evening, the government publicly released official information regarding PM Modi's programs at Churachandpur's Peace Ground and Imphal's Kangla Fort. Large hoardings have been erected in this regard.
Manipur Under President's Rule
Currently, President's Rule is in effect in Manipur. It was implemented in February 2025 when the then Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned. This step was taken in view of the political instability and violent incidents in the state. The Prime Minister's visit is taking place during President's Rule, making it even more significant.
Security Arrangements and Guidelines
In view of the Prime Minister's visit, the state government has made stringent security arrangements. Special arrangements have been made in Imphal and Churachandpur districts. A grand stage is being prepared at Kangla Fort and Peace Ground, spread across approximately 237 acres. A large number of central and state security forces have been deployed.
The government has also issued some guidelines for the people attending the program. Participants will be prohibited from bringing items such as keys, pens, water bottles, bags, handkerchiefs, umbrellas, lighters, matches, pieces of cloth, sharp objects, and ammunition. Children below 12 years of age and sick individuals have also been advised not to attend the program.
Reactions from Local Leaders
Manipur's sole Rajya Sabha MP, Leishemba Sanajaoba, described the Prime Minister's visit as fortunate for the state and its people. He stated that this is the first time a Prime Minister has decided to visit the state during such a difficult time. Leishemba appealed to the people to welcome PM Modi and not to call for any kind of boycott.
