Delhi-NCR Pollution Intensifies Bone and Joint Problems, AIIMS Study Reveals Alarming Link to Rheumatoid Arthritis

An AIIMS study warns that rising Delhi-NCR pollution, especially PM2.5, increases oxidative stress and inflammation, worsening bone and joint problems like rheumatoid arthritis and bone weakness. Learn about risks and pr

The impact of increasing pollution in Delhi-NCR is now also being observed on bones and joints. According to an AIIMS study, small particulate matter (PM2.5) present in pollution increases oxidative stress and chronic inflammation in the body, leading to a rise in problems like rheumatoid arthritis and bone weakness. The elderly, women, and people with pre-existing conditions are most at risk.

Pollution and Bone Health: The impact of rising air pollution in Delhi-NCR is also visible on bones and joints. According to Dr. Uma Kumar, HOD of the Rheumatology Department at AIIMS Delhi, PM2.5 particles enter the body and increase oxidative stress and inflammation. Particularly, the elderly, women, and those already suffering from rheumatoid arthritis or asthma are most affected. Experts advise wearing masks, installing air purifiers at home, and regularly taking medications as prescribed by a doctor.

Impact of Pollution on Bones and Joints

The rising pollution in Delhi and its surrounding areas is no longer limited to the lungs. According to a study by AIIMS Delhi, small particulate matter (PM2.5) present in pollution enters the body, increasing oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. This directly affects bones and joints, leading to a rise in problems such as rheumatoid arthritis, joint inflammation, and bone weakness.

Dr. Uma Kumar, HOD of Rheumatology at AIIMS, states that pollution also affects the immune system, causing the body to attack its own tissues and cells. This risk is particularly high for people already suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.

Who is More at Risk

The most affected by this threat are the elderly, women, rheumatoid arthritis patients, and people with asthma or allergies. Due to pollution, common problems for them include joint pain, difficulty in movement, back pain, and persistent fatigue.

According to experts, an increase in these symptoms has been observed during winters when pollution rises in Delhi-NCR. Patterns from previous years indicate that this problem is persistent and can pose serious health risks if precautions are not taken in time.

Measures to Prevent Pollution

Dr. Kumar suggests that to prevent pollution, avoid morning walks, wear masks, and use air purifiers at home. Additionally, it is important to pay attention to nutrition in one's diet and regularly take medications as advised by a doctor.
