Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) has undertaken a historic and unique initiative for the transgender community. The company has appointed 20 transgender individuals as metro security personnel.

New Delhi: Hyderabad Metro has made a commendable move by employing 20 transgender individuals. All of them have been deployed as security personnel, a decision for which Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) is receiving widespread praise. HMRL provided special training to all these transgender individuals, and upon completion of their training, they have been appointed to duty starting Monday.

They have been entrusted with the responsibility of security at some metro stations as well as inside metro trains. This step is expected not only to promote inclusion but also to enhance women's safety.

Transgenders in Security Responsibilities

The newly appointed transgender security personnel have been assigned responsibilities such as security checks at metro stations, assisting passengers, and ensuring the safety of trains. This marks the first time in Hyderabad Metro that individuals from the transgender community have been given security-related tasks. This initiative is considered a major achievement towards social justice and an inclusive approach.

Prior to their appointment, HMRL enrolled all 20 transgender individuals in a special training program. The training focused on all aspects of security procedures, emergency management, passenger assistance, and technical operations. After completing their training, they were appointed to secure metro stations and trains starting Monday.

Five Lakh People Travel Daily

Hyderabad Metro Rail is considered one of the country's most modern urban transit systems. The city has three metro corridors and 57 stations, where approximately 5 lakh people travel daily. About 30 percent of these passengers are women. HMRL made this decision specifically to enhance the safety of women and boost passenger confidence.

Sarfaraz Ahmed, Director of HMRL, praised this initiative, stating that it is not merely the appointment of security personnel but a significant step towards social empowerment. He said, “We are proud that the representation of the transgender community has increased within the Hyderabad Metro family. This initiative will not only create employment opportunities for the community but also strengthen the Telangana government’s vision of an inclusive society.”

Telangana Government's Contribution, Benefits for Passengers and Women

The Telangana government has also made a significant contribution to this initiative. The government not only supported this endeavor but also assisted in policy formulation aimed at the empowerment of the transgender community and ensuring equal opportunities. This initiative has opened a new chapter in the state's journey towards inclusive development.

  • Enhanced Women's Safety: With the new appointments, the level of security for women at metro stations has increased.
  • Social Acceptance: The transgender community will gain equal rights and respect.
  • Increased Confidence: The presence of transgender security personnel will boost passenger confidence.

This initiative by Hyderabad Metro is not merely of local significance; it also sets an example of equality and an inclusive approach on a global scale. While many developed countries grant employment and social rights to the transgender community, such an initiative in India delivers a new cultural and social message.
