After monsoon rainfall, photographs and videos showing waterlogging in parts of the airport premises have surfaced, turning the issue into a political dispute. The controversy intensified after Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav’s remarks, followed by responses from a BJP MP and MLA.
Photographs showing water accumulated in some parts of the airport premises emerged after the rainfall. The opposition subsequently questioned the arrangements made by the government and administration. Akhilesh Yadav targeted the government through social media over the issue and took a jibe at the airport’s arrangements. BJP leaders at the local level responded to his remarks.
The MP and MLA said administrative work was underway to address the waterlogging problem in the airport area. They said waterlogging can occur in several major cities and important premises during heavy rainfall. They argued that questioning the airport’s overall achievements on the basis of a single incident was not appropriate.
The BJP leaders also said the airport had played an important role in improving connectivity and economic activity in the region. They said the number of passengers had increased and air connectivity with several cities had improved. They said attention should be focused on improving arrangements rather than making political comments about the airport’s success.
The MP and MLA further said that if waterlogging occurred at any location after rainfall, the administration could work to resolve it, but the entire airport project should not be targeted on that basis. They said shortcomings in development works should be addressed when identified, but every problem should not be turned into a political dispute.
The opposition, meanwhile, said waterlogging at a major airport could not be treated merely as a normal rainfall-related problem. It said drainage and water-disposal arrangements at an important premises such as an airport should be robust. The opposition has sought answers from the government and the agencies concerned on this basis.
Waterlogging during the monsoon has become a challenge in cities. When heavy rain occurs within a short period, drains and drainage systems come under pressure. If water-disposal capacity is lower than the volume of rainfall, water can accumulate on roads, parking areas and premises. At airports, such conditions can create difficulties for passengers.

The opposition has questioned why water accumulated on the premises after rainfall if the airport is described as being equipped with modern facilities. Opposition leaders said such incidents indicate the need to review the drainage system and the quality of construction.
During rainfall, water disposal remains a key challenge for the administration. Pumping arrangements, cleaning of drains and the capacity of the main drainage line are important for addressing the problem. Water-disposal conditions in areas surrounding the airport can also affect the premises.
Amid the political dispute, attention is now focused on the steps the administration takes to find a permanent solution to waterlogging. If water is removed only by installing pumps during rainfall, the problem could recur. A technical review of the drainage system and a permanent water-disposal arrangement would be required.
BJP leaders have cited the increasing number of passengers and improved connectivity as key achievements of the airport. They said such projects help promote regional development and employment opportunities. They therefore said the entire project should not be questioned over one waterlogging incident.
The opposition, however, has argued that the success of development projects cannot be assessed only on the basis of passenger numbers. Basic facilities, drainage, traffic arrangements and passenger convenience should also receive equal importance, it said.
The dispute has also highlighted the importance of drainage arrangements at large public and transport facilities during the monsoon. With incidents of heavy rainfall increasing, such locations need to be prepared in advance.
For now, political statements over the waterlogging incident continue. BJP leaders have criticised Akhilesh Yadav’s remarks, while the opposition is presenting the issue as a question over the government’s arrangements.
