A 24-year-old man was found dead in a well near the bus stand in the Sadar police station area of Chatra district, Jharkhand. The deceased’s family has alleged that his friends conspired to kill him and dumped his body in the well, while police are investigating the circumstances of his death.
The deceased has been identified as 24-year-old Sunny Yadav, a resident of Ward Number 22 in the Kishanpur locality of Chatra city. His family includes his parents and two sisters.
According to his family, Sunny left home on Wednesday afternoon and told his family that he would return soon. However, he did not come back. At around 8 pm, family members called his mobile phone, but they could not establish contact with him.
On Thursday morning, villagers informed the family that Sunny’s body had been found in a well. The family reached the spot after receiving the information, following which a crowd gathered in the area.
The family has rejected the possibility of the incident being a normal accident and expressed suspicion that Sunny’s friends may have been involved in his death. They alleged that he was killed as part of a conspiracy and that his body was subsequently thrown into the well.
The allegation of murder has not been confirmed. Police are investigating how Sunny reached the well and the circumstances in which he died. A final conclusion is expected to depend on the investigation and the postmortem report.
After receiving information about the incident, police reached the spot and had the body removed from the well. The body was taken into police custody after the necessary legal procedures and sent to Sadar Hospital in Chatra for postmortem.
The postmortem report is expected to help establish the cause of death. Police will also question people connected with the case and proceed on the basis of available evidence.
Family members were initially unwilling to proceed with the postmortem. Police officer ASI Dukhi Ram Mahto explained the legal procedure to them and persuaded them to cooperate. The body was subsequently sent to the hospital for postmortem.
Police have assured the family that the matter will be investigated and that action will be taken against those found responsible.
The incident has also brought back the family’s earlier loss. According to the report, Sunny’s aunt died under suspicious circumstances around six months ago.
With another death occurring in the family within six months, relatives are awaiting clarity on the actual circumstances surrounding Sunny’s death. The family has sought an impartial investigation and action against those responsible if the investigation establishes that Sunny was murdered.
Police are examining several aspects of the case, including when Sunny left home, who was with him, whom he was last in contact with, the last location of his mobile phone and whether he reached the well himself or someone else took his body there.
Police have not yet released detailed information on these points.
The family’s allegations against Sunny’s friends will also be investigated. An offence cannot be established against any person solely on the basis of allegations made by relatives. Police will need evidence to substantiate any such allegation.
Mobile call details, location information, the condition of the scene, information from eyewitnesses and the postmortem report may form part of the evidence examined during the investigation. If the investigation establishes the involvement of any person, police may take legal action against them.
The postmortem report is considered important in determining the next course of the investigation. If injuries are found on the body or if the cause of death is determined to be something other than drowning, the direction of the investigation may change.
If the postmortem does not establish such findings, police will continue examining the circumstances surrounding the death and the evidence available at the scene.
