The Day of Lord Vishnu's Awakening from Yog-Nidra

Dev Uthani Ekadashi literally means the awakening of the gods. According to the scriptures, Lord Vishnu enters a state of yogic sleep (yog-nidra) on the Ekadashi of the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the Ashadha month. Following this, for four months, known as Chaturmas, auspicious ceremonies like weddings, housewarmings, and other auspicious activities are not performed.

Lord Vishnu awakens on the Ekadashi of the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the Kartik month. This day is called Dev Uthani Ekadashi. As soon as Lord Vishnu rises from his yogic sleep, the commencement of auspicious activities on Earth begins. It is also known as Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi.

Worship Rituals and Traditions

The worship for Dev Uthani Ekadashi begins in the morning with a bath and taking a vow to observe the fast. An outline of Lord Vishnu's feet is drawn in the courtyard of the house or at the worship place. Then, in a mortar (okhali) or a wooden vessel, a picture is made with geru (ochre), and fruits, water chestnuts (singhara), seasonal fruits, sugarcane, berries, and sweets are placed.

It is then covered with a small basket or a larger basket. At night, lamps (deepak) are lit, and Lord Vishnu and other deities are worshipped. Lighting lamps outside the house on this day is also considered auspicious.

There is also a tradition of awakening Lord Vishnu at night. People wake up the Lord by blowing conch shells (shankh), ringing bells (ghanta), and gongs (ghariyal). At this time, the following verse is recited – “Utho Deva, Baitha Deva, Anguriya Chhatkao Deva, Nayi Soot Nayi Kapas, Dev Uthaye Kartik Maas.” After this, the aarti of Lord Vishnu is performed, and prasad (offering) is distributed among everyone.

Special Significance of Tulsi Vivah

On Dev Uthani Ekadashi, many people organize Tulsi Vivah. On this day, the Tulsi plant is married to Lord Shaligram. This is considered highly auspicious.

It is stated in the scriptures that no wedding ceremony is considered complete without Tulsi Vivah. In many families, this marriage is performed with the same rituals and traditions as a daughter's wedding. Performing Tulsi Vivah brings happiness and prosperity to the home and increases auspiciousness in life.

For couples who do not have children or do not have a daughter, performing Tulsi Vivah is considered particularly fruitful. This event is not only religiously significant but also a symbol of unity and faith in society.
