Understanding Gochar in Astrology: How Planetary Transits Influence Your Life

You've likely heard the term "gochar" often in discussions related to astrology. But are you aware of the extent to which it can impact your life? Whether someone lands a job, a wedding is postponed, or there's a sudden financial gain, gochar could be a significant factor behind these events. Let's explore what gochar actually is and how it affects your life.

What Does Gochar Mean?

Gochar directly translates to the current position of planets. It refers to which sign and house a planet is traversing in the sky at a given time. It's similar to a seed buried in the ground that sprouts and grows into a tree when the weather is favorable. The seed has the potential to become a tree from its birth, but it needs the right environment to grow. Similarly, gochar activates the yogas hidden in your birth chart.

The Relationship Between Birth Chart and Gochar

Each person's birth chart is the script of their life. It records the positions of the planets at the time of birth. But gochar determines when this script will come to life on the stage and which scene will be played out. In essence, gochar indicates when the time has come for a particular potential in your chart to bear fruit.

What Are the Different Types of Planetary Motion?

To understand gochar, it's essential to understand the motion of planets. Planets don't always move at a consistent speed. There are three main types of planetary motion:

  • Sama Gati (Normal Motion): When a planet moves at its normal speed, it's called Sama Gati. The results obtained during this time are gradual, requiring patience.
  • Atichari Gati (Fast Motion): In this motion, the planet moves at a rapid pace. Consequently, the results are also obtained quickly, sometimes so fast that we can't fully capitalize on them.
  • Vakri Gati (Retrograde Motion): When a planet moves in reverse, or becomes retrograde, it brings confusion and delays. Any decisions made during this time should be carefully considered because the results may be the opposite of what is expected.

Gochar Related to Ascendant, Moon, and Sun

The effect of gochar is not only seen through the position of planets but also according to the Ascendant (Lagna), Moon, and Sun.

  • The Ascendant represents our body, health, and actions.
  • The Moon is associated with the mind, emotions, and mental state.
  • The Sun symbolizes the soul, confidence, and honor.

When a planet transits over these three, changes are observed in life accordingly.

Why is Gochar Analyzed from the Moon?

According to scriptures, analyzing gochar from the Moon is given the most importance. The formula "Chandreshu Gochareshu" clearly states that the results of gochar should be seen based on the Moon, because the Moon is the significator of the mind and determines a person's mental state. This is why gochar analyses done from the Moon are considered more accurate.

However, relying solely on the Moon is not entirely correct. In practice, the effect of gochar must be examined from all aspects, including the Sun, Ascendant, Dasha, Antardasha, and Pratyantar Dasha. Along with this, the analysis of Ashtakavarga is also very important.

The Importance of Ashtakavarga

Ashtakavarga is a mathematical analysis of the strength of planets. It reveals how powerful a planet is in a particular location. For example, if Saturn is transiting a sign, but the Ashtakavarga has a low Bindu (point) number in that location, the auspiciousness of Saturn will not be as effective. Conversely, when transiting a location with a higher Bindu number, its effect will be more powerful.

How Gochar Changes Life

Suppose a person has been searching for a job for a long time and has the yogas in their birth chart, but nothing is happening. As soon as a favorable gochar of the Sun or Saturn occurs, they suddenly receive a job offer. This doesn't mean that the yoga wasn't there before; rather, the gochar activated that yoga.

Similarly, if someone is facing obstacles in their marriage and a favorable gochar of Venus or Jupiter aspects or transits the seventh house, the possibility of marriage arises.
